Kiyunga Islamic Primary School has partnered with Sister Schools since 2014. In that time, they’ve seen great improvements in their academic scores, progress which we’re proud to be a part of!

Kiyunga is a large school serving almost 1000 kids. It’s located in a small town on the busy Kampala-Jinja highway, and enrolls students from pre-primary (preschool) through Primary 7 (7th grade). The incredible staff are some of our most dedicated partners. Stella, our on-site coordinator, is enthusiastic about the partnership because of the benefits it brings her students, and does everything in her power to ensure our work runs smoothly. Yusuf, the principal, is equally dedicated, crediting Sister Schools for much of the school’s current success.

Recently, Kiyunga students performed very well on national exams. In 2023, a staggering 80% of Kiyunga Primary 8 students (8th grade) achieved a score of D2 or higher on their Primary Leaving Exam. This is compared to just 57% nationally. The PLE is an incredibly important standardized test that unlocks further education opportunities for students in Uganda. D1 and D2 are the highest possible scores. Kiyunga’s recent performance on the PLE is a huge testament to both the students and the teachers, who are achieving wonderful results despite less-than-ideal conditions.

Kiyunga’s enrollment has grown rapidly, and they do not currently have adequate space for all their students. Classrooms are crowded, and in some cases, they don’t even have enough seats for every child. With so many needs, the supplies and books Sister Schools provides make a big impact. “It is because of your continued support,” Yusuf explains, “through provision of scholastic materials and extracurricular supplies that is why Kiyunga is doing so well.”

We are lucky to have such a vibrant partnership with Kiyunga, and excited by their recent academic success. We’re looking forward to continuing to help their students thrive for years to come.
