One of Sister Schools’ biggest sources of impact in Uganda is our Literacy Centers. Through these school libraries, we disseminate donated books to Uganda children, and provide the training and leadership to encourage engagement with as many books and students as possible. Recently, we facilitated “Book Week” at each of our Literacy Centers to encourage more students to utilize the books available!
It started with Ruth, our Literacy Center Coordinator, training the Librarians on everything to come in this exciting week and setting them up for success. After the training, they all headed home and got to work.
At the beginning of Book Week, a few students got the honor of speaking at a school assembly. Each student shared about a book they’d borrowed from the library recently, summarizing the book and highlighting key takeaways.
With these assemblies serving as inspiration, we then took Book Week into the classrooms. Each class was encouraged to select a book from the library and put together a short skit to act it out. This got even non-readers engaged in the process, excited about reading, and helped bring books to life.
Book Week wrapped up with some of the best skits being performed at school assemblies at the end of the week. Take a look at the kids practicing their skits here!
It’s so fun to see all the creative ways our Literacy Centers inspire kids to read!
